Children in the digital environment and the right to privacy and access to appropriate information

The Committee notes the recent regulation on restriction of the use of mobile phones in primary and junior schools, recalling its general comment No. 25 (2021) on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment and recommends that the State Party develop regulations and a national safeguarding policy to protect the rights, privacy and safety of children in the digital environment and to protect them from the harmful effects of excessive screen use, harmful content, online risks and targeted or age-inappropriate harmful advertising including in the context of AI.

The Committee recommends that the State Party strengthen measures to protect the right to privacy of children in the digital environment, and the remedies available for children whose right to privacy has been violated.
